Giardiniera: A Mid-West Delight

When I moved from Chicago to Los Angeles I didn't realize that certain things are ONLY in the Mid-West.  Western dressing is one (I LOVE the irony) and giardinera is another.  These are two essentials that I have been packing in my bag and bringing back with me on my trips. Unfortunately, thanks to the lovely TSA and airlines charging for bags - that little exchange has ended.  For this past Fourth of July weekend sausages, I was forced to make my own giardinera;  it was about time actually.  I'm personally shocked that i haven't done this yet.  In...

Kumgerine? Tangerquat?

Over the weekend my friend Dave took me to his friends house in Atwater Village to harvest some backyard kumquats.  I had so much fun. A few months ago, chef and owner Terri Wahl updated the space and opened a fantastic little marketplace for take-out food, cheese, charcuterie and gifts. She had us at the jam selection alone. Jam for Origami Vinyl

Yesterday I was over at Origami Vinyl chatting up the boys.  I was telling them about the "jam session" last Saturday and how everyone LOVED the Origami Vinyl's Blueberry Basil.  We were discussing having an event at El Prado, which is a wine and cheese place in Echo Park, so I asked them what kind of jam they would want on cheese.  Without missing a beat "PINEAPPLE JALAPENO!"  Sean blurted out. I LOVE a good cooking challenge so today I planned to try it out.  Their idea sounded like a pizza topping so I thought I would also add some...

Cherry Season is finally here!  I have made many cherry batches this year and I get so excited when I see cherries everywhere I turn . While making this spicy, sweet and boozey jam, I kept thinking of my FAVORITE Derby Doll: Ms. CHERRYLICIOUS!
